The Week Ahead: Highlights

Asia-Pacific Preview

Purchasing Managers Business Activity Reports in Focus

By Brian Jackson, Econoday Economist

The main focus of Asia-Pacific data in the week ahead will be the monthly PMI surveys for the region. July surveys showed the impact of disruption to access through the Strait of Hormuz throughout the month, and this will likely again be evident in the August surveys. Strong AI-related demand, however, has supported activity and sentiment across the region and should again be reflected in the PMI surveys. South Korea trade data for August should also show this impact, with less timely July industrial production and retail sales data also scheduled for release.

Another key event will be the Reserve Bank of New Zealand policy decision. The RBNZs last policy meeting was in early July, when officials increased the official cash rate by 25 basis points from 2.25 percent to 2.50 percent. That was the first increase in the policy rate since 2023, with officials citing the impact of higher fuel prices on the inflation outlook and advising that some further reduction in monetary stimulus was likely to be required to return inflation to its target range of 1 percent to 3 percent. Inflation data published last month after that meeting showed an increase from 3.1 percent in the three months to March to 4.1 percent in the three months to June. This suggests another hike to 2.75 percent will be strongly considered next week.

Australia will report quarterly GDP and monthly trade data. GDP growth slowed sharply in the three months to March, largely reflecting the immediate impact of the Iran conflict, and subdued conditions are expected to have persisted in the three months to June. The initial impact of rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of Australia in February and March may also weigh on growth in the quarter to some extent, with officials earlier this month judging that the economy is now slowing as expected.

India will also report GDP data. At the Reserve Bank of Indias most recent policy meeting, held earlier this month, officials left policy rates on hold. Officials again noted the uncertainty associated with the Iran conflict but expressed confidence in the resilience of domestic economic activity.

Employment Data Up Next

By Theresa Sheehan, Econoday Economist

The August 31 week is heading into the unofficial end of summer with the Labor Day weekend (September 5-7). This observance falls a little later than usual and is likely to cause some minor mismatches in seasonal adjustment factors for spending and employment.

The monthly employment report for August at 8:30 ET on Friday, September 4 comes after a decline of 23,000 in July which included substantial payroll drops of 19,400 in retail trade, 14,000 in financial activities, 40,000 in leisure and hospitality, and 49,600 in local government education.

July reflected widespread closure in the retail sector as some major chains closed underperforming locations. The decline in local education may be due to the timing of the start and end of local school years. With Labor Day later than usual, some workers may have been off payrolls in July but will return in August. Falling payrolls in the financial sector could be in part from softness in the housing market and/or AI moving further into customer service jobs. With high gasoline prices and other hikes eating up consumer disposable income, many households were traveling less in the summer months. Temporary workers brought on in anticipation of the vacation period may have been laid off.

August could well see a rebound in education hiring, but elsewhere hiring probably will remain restricted to a few narrow sectors hungry for skilled workers like healthcare and specialty construction trades. Most businesses will try to hold on to their present workforce. Labor demand remains limited but so does the supply of qualified job applicants.

The August employment report typically sees nonfarm payrolls come in below expectations, but nearly as often is revised upward in the September report. August can be difficult to survey with respondents vacation schedules. However, this is the last employment situation the FOMC will have when it meets on September 15-16.

On August 28, the BLS released its March 2026 preliminary benchmark revision for nonfarm payrolls. This year the expected annual revision is down 79,000, a much smaller revision than in the past few years. Also notable is that the BLS said that the preliminary benchmark revision for private payrolls is down 178,000 which means that government payrolls are expected to be revised higher. The final benchmark revision will be released with the January 2027 data in February 2027.

Also look for annual revision when the ADP national employment report is released at 8:15 ET on Wednesday. This is the time of year ADP normally issues its big revisions, although there is another round of revisions after the BLS benchmark data becomes available in February.
